Many Gather to Give…
Little did we know when we planned our April Outreach for the people in the Dewey-Emerson area, that we would have a community of Christians join with us to make the day a special blessing for all.
Several of us from People’s Ministry gathered around 9:30 am to begin setting up the tables, and placing the clothing and other items out for people to gather what they needed.
Just as we were starting, four teens and their leader came from Mission Madness to assist in our efforts. Jen & Amanda represented Pittsford Presbyterian Church, Nick and Peter, from John Knox Presbyterian, and Kevin, their leader, came from York Presbyterian. All were a great help setting up tables, sorting and placing the items on in an orderly fashion, planting flowers in our new planter, and helping people carry their new things to their houses and cars.
Shortly before 10 am the missions team arrived from Webster Presbyterian Church bringing more items (which were snatched up before they hit the tables), and joining in the efforts to serve. The Webster team led the prayer initiative by asking our neighbors if they had prayer needs and then praying with them.
What a blessing it was to see all of our Christian friends engaged in serving our community. As we gathered for prayer and thanksgiving following the event, we discovered that the day had been a blessing not only to the recipients, but also to each who served.
Finally the outreach was over. Our helpers had gone, and all that was left to do was put away things that were not taken, and bring in the tables. But God was not through blessing us. As we began the cleanup, Donna and John, members of the Cathedral Community, appeared, and joined in our cleanup efforts. This certainly was an answer to our unspoken prayer, as we were tired from our days work.
We have had many outreaches, and all have been a blessing to both the community, and to ourselves, but this outreach, with the united efforts of our friends from near and far, seemed especially sacred as we gathered to bring God love to the people in our neighborhood.
