Agricultural Awareness Quiz
In an attempt to engage and promote an awareness of immigration issues affecting our area, the Migration Working Group prepared this short quiz to share with you.
Western New York has a vibrant agricultural economy. We can grow anything from milk to vegetables to fruit. The people of our area can eat nutritious, safe, locally grown foods.
However our domestic workforce does not choose to apply for the kind of work needed to produce the variety of food demanded by local people. Farmers have become dependent on foreign-born workers to do the work in an immigration policy environment which serves neither the worker nor the farmer.
Competitive wages, Social Security taxes, and income taxes are paid. Housing, transportation and health care are provided. All of this in a social justice shadow where our government can shatter farm and worker family dreams of success and peace at any time.
As a result food production can and does migrate to other parts of the world where workers and growing conditions are available.
- The Eat Locally Grown Broccoli (ELGB) members of our Presbytery will be “happy” to know that on net, 95% of broccoli eaten in the northeastern US is grown and packed in:
- Mexico
- China
- Of all the farm workers employed in the US, what percent would you estimate to be undocumented?
- 70%
- 50%
- 30%
- How many people is this? (Round to the nearest million.)
- True or False: The US population is getting older on average with a decline in birth rate. This leads to a shrinking economy with fewer available workers throughout.
- Can you think of one simple solution to the complex issues involved?
- Yes or No: In your opinion can we have a healthy economy, homegrown food, legal guest workers and social justice?
- Finally, what do you see as the biggest roadblock to a just solution?
- The wall isn’t finished and is too low.
- Politics as usual.
- Anger built on misinformation and someone’s personal gain.
