Co-Presbyter Position Descriptions

At its May 23, 2006 meeting, the Presbytery approved these position descriptions for the two Co-presbyter positions.

Title
Co-Presbyter for Congregational Vitality
Purpose
To encourage and enable PGV and its member pastors and congregations to fulfill their vision of glorifying God by knowing, living and sharing Christ.
Category
In accord with the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is classified as exempt. It is a full-time position.
Employment
Employment is through election by Presbytery for an indefinite term upon the nomination of a representative search committee.
Accountability
This position is accountable to the Presbytery through the Council, which is the supervisor, and to the Personnel Committee.
Responsibilities
  1. Model the vision and strategies of the Presbytery
  2. Exhibit a cooperative and collegial working model and sharing of responsibilities, always for the greater good of the ministry of the presbytery
  3. Proactively encourage and support visionary, transformational leadership in all churches.
  4. Interact with congregations, to resource, affirm and support their initiatives.
  5. Represent the Presbytery at significant congregational events.
  6. With the other co-presbyter, convene regular presbytery staff meetings.
  7. Develop and coordinate leadership development and training programs for elders, Christian educators and members of church bodies.
  8. Encourage and facilitate relationships and program partnerships among churches.
  9. Resource committees, ministry teams and other presbytery bodies as negotiated with Council.
  10. Develop and coordinate stewardship training programs and serve as a stewardship resource for churches.
  11. Champion evangelism efforts and new church development, especially among congregational leadership.
  12. Encourage and resource outreach initiatives and envision mission development programs, in churches, partnership groups and the presbytery.
  13. Participate in other Presbyterian governing bodies, meetings, workshops and ecumenical groups as negotiated with Council.
  14. Where appropriate to the particular co-presbyter role, serve as public spokesperson for the presbytery after consultations with other presbytery leadership.
  15. Maintain regular and timely communication with and among churches.
  16. Supervisor of record for Program Support and Resource Center personnel.
  17. Resource and serve as liaison with committees, ministry teams and other presbytery bodies as negotiated with Council.
  18. Provide prophetic leadership, vision, and inspiration to congregations in the areas of peace and justice
Annual Review
A performance review and evaluation will be conducted annually by the Personnel Committee. Council and committee chairs will be consulted as appropriate. This review and evaluation will be based upon the position description and stated work objectives. A comprehensive review and evaluation will be conducted at least every five years in accordance with the Personnel Policies of the presbytery.

  6. Develop and coordinate leadership development and training programs for clergy and members of presbytery bodies.
  7. With the other co-presbyter, convene regular presbytery staff meetings.
